What to expect during a newborn session

So you’re thinking about booking a newborn photo shoot or perhaps you already have booked a newborn photo shoots and want to know what to expect.

All photographers conduct their sessions differently, so I’ll go over what I’ve found to be the most efficient and common sense approach to these sessions.

Firstly, when you arrive to the studio, it will be quite warm. I like to get the studio to about 75 -78 degrees. While this can be too warm for some adult clients, let me assure you this is quite comfy for the little ones. Not to mention it is very conducive to getting baby to sleep soundly and stay asleep.

I like to start all newborn studio sessions with the family shots with mom, dad, and any siblings. Not everyone wants these shots, and that’s fine. But if a client wants them included, I find it best to get these shots completed first while hair and makeup is still freshly done and before young siblings get too bored or distracted. I will do shots of the newborn with the entire family (mom, dad, siblings), as well as just shots of mom and dad with baby, both individually and together. If there are siblings, we will also get shots of just them with their brand new brother or sister.

Following the photographs of the newly-expanded family, we will move on to the shots of baby alone. We will do any desired prop shots first, moving from one prop to the next as baby allows. Keep in mind we will stop to feed, change, or soothe baby as needed.

Lastly, before concluding the session, I will photograph your little one on a newborn poser. This is a large, comfy beanbag-like cushion on which I will pose your baby. He/she will be warm and comfortable as he gets into those sweet, curly positions that moms and dads love.

For the duration of the session, your baby will remain in the same room with you. You are free to watch television, relax, and enjoy some beverages while I work to get you images you’ll enjoy for a lifetime.
